Abstract
Primary malignant lymphomas of the thyroid is a rare disease of old women whose presenting symptoms include a rapildy enlarging, firm and painless mass often associated with hoarseness. The diagnosis is usually made after a thyroidectomy for a
presumed
poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma. It is difficult to diagnose early and preoperatively because the disease is too rare and doesn't manifest aggressive clinical features in early stage. Unfortunately, the patients may have grave prognosis
if
they
were diagnosed late or postopelatively.
The most common premalignant condition associated with thyroid lymphoma is known as chronic autoimmune(Hashimoto's) thyroiditis. Therefore, fine needle aspiration biopsy of thyroid nodules is useful as a safe and simple screening method for
lymphoma of
the thyroid if the patient has a diffusely abnormal thyroid or a massive nodule with evidence for Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Early diagnosis using fine needle aspiration biopsy and appropriate treatment may improve prognosis for lymphoma of the
thyroid.
We experienced a case of lymphoma of the thyroid occured from Hashimto's thyroiditis in a firm and painless thyroid mass. She had diagnosed as Hashimoto's thyroiditis 2 years ago. The diffuse and large cell type of malignant lymphoma was
diagnosed
after
total thyrodectomy and then MACOP-B chemotherapy was performed.
